My favorite Drink

While in Manhattan Mark and I discovered a fabulous Brazilian restaurant that served the #1 drink in Brazil. For me this drink was love at first taste. I can not pronounce the drink (it is more then 2 syllables, which makes it difficult for me to say), but I know I love it.

Caipirinha is like a mojito only better. I can not get it here because the bars do not stock the liquor, so when we go to NYC I indulge and have a few.(until recently that is). To make the drink, it is an absolute must that Cachaca be used.

(Caipirinha (pronounced [kaj.pi.'ri.ɲɐ]) is Brazil's national cocktail made with Cachaça (pronounced IPA: [ˌkaˈʃasɐ]), sugar and lime. Cachaça is Brazil's most common distilled alcoholic beverage. Like rum, it is made from sugarcane, however, cachaça is made from sugarcane juice whereas rum is made from molasses, a byproduct of the sugar refining process. )

The recipe: 1 lime in four pieces, 2 1/2 ounces of Cachaca, 1-2 tbs fine cane sugar, crushed ice. Crush the pieces of lime with the sugar thoroughly in a thumbler, add the ice, Cachaca and stir well. The lime remains in the glass.

I was able to get a bottle of Cachaca recently and will enjoy this drink on the deck of the Cottage with a View.

Sounds good, but beer is so much easier to order when you are drunk...

Yummm. I know how annoying it can be to find certain liquors. I went through a Mai Tai phase once. I found the secret ingredient was Creme de Noyaux... finding it was a little bit of a challenge.

Hey... Guarana!?!

It *is* yummy!! Since we moved to Brazil when I was four years old, the first soda pop I remember was Gaurana!!

In Connecticut I found it in a grocery story. It is still yummy!

Oh yeah, I love/make/order caiprihina's all the time - it's very important to roll the "r" when you pronounce it or a bartender won't know what you're talking about. I had a lot of them when I was in South America, along with Pisco Sours but the first time I had one, it was in New York City!

I have a bottle of cachaca... hmm... maybe Margarita Mondays will be replaced this week by Caiprihinas!
