Tater Tots not a healthy food?

Our town paper has been disseminating falsehoods being told by the lunch ladies at the high school. According to the paper the head Lunch Lady has decided that baked tater tots are not a healthy food for high schoolers to eat. She has stopped serving the delicious delicacy and is now offering baby carrots.

No one asked her to explain what constitutes a healthy food, they meekly go along with her statement as if it is God's word and put in print so all the health fanatics can say "told ya so. It must be true The Post printed it" .

I am not against baby carrots, but they certainly are not a substitute for tater tots. Tater tots are made from potato, they are baked not deep fried, and do not have trans fat. How can they be unhealthy?

It's not like the kids will put salt, cheese whiz or gravy on the tots to make the tasty morsels unhealthy, because those items are not on the menu either. What will be next?

Reminds me of Jack LaLane just turning 90. When asked his secret to staying in such great shape, he said "If man made it, don't eat it. And if it tastes good, spit it out".

Not that someone should just give their opinion about what is "healthier" and have it laid down as the law but I'd have to agree with the little old lunch lady on this one.

Tater tots have fat, about 7g per serving, and 1.5g is saturated fat (the bad kind that raises cholesterol), not to mention that the tater tots don't offer anything on the nurtitional side and are about 150 calories per serving.

Carrots, at 5 calories per serving, have almost no fat, and are high in fiber, iron, maganese, potassium, vitamin A, etc. They are high in sugars (natural) is the only thing that could be considered not optimal.

I forgot to mention that even though carrots can be considered "healthier," tater-tots are a staple of school cafeterias everywhere and should not be replaced!
