I am reading " The Dante Club" by Matthew Pearl and find it very entertaining. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russel Lowell, and J.T. Fields are on a quest to solve a series of murders in Boston, 1865. The book is intriguing not only because of the main characters but because of the social protocols and stigma attached to the sordid business of crime fight. These gentlemen are particularly concerned about their reputations, but also the need to fulfill an perceived obligation required by their social standing.

Sounds interesting and up my alley - let me know after you're done if you'd recommend it.
GKL: I liked the book, at points it was slow, so I skipped ahead a few paragraphs. Matthew Pearl (the author) needed to develope the friendship between th e main characters more. Other than that it was a good book.
