My nephew Jacob called yesterday afternoon and invited me to dinner. He is, hmmmm, 8 I think, maybe 9. The purpose of the invitation was to come for pasta dinner. My nephew cooked the sauce, along with the meatballs. He explained that he made the sauce just like his far away grandma makes it. His far away grandma, my sister in laws mother, makes the absolutely best sauce I have ever eaten. I don't have a clue as to how it is made, I only know pork is involved and fresh herbs. It's incredibly thick, dark, the aroma makes me smile and drool.
Jacob's sauce was delicious!!! Just like his grandma's. I had four bowls of sauce, meatballs and pasta. Obviously I over ate, but I could not help it. The sauce was great!
My nephew has liked to cook for about 2 or 3 years. He has his mother's and grandmother's talent, several cookbooks, and the desire to cook. Hopefully he will continue cooking and become a chef.
I can hardly wait for the next invitation.

It is wonderful that a boy that age is given the opportunity to be so independent. I'm ashamed to say that my girls were very busy in the kitchen at that age, but my son (8, almost 9) is mostly catered to by his sisters and me. And I call myself a feminist???? WTF?!
You have motivated me to get him in the kitchen! (Well, he did make us pizza burgers once)
Does he say "pow" when he adds spice or does he have a moniker all his own?
Not sure if he says "pow" or not. I do not want to be around when he cooks, because I know he is not the best handwasher in the world. I guess at 8 1/2 handwashing is not a priority with some kids. He likes to double dip though, that is taste with his finger and then taste again with the same finger he put in his mouth. Double dipping is a hugh NO NO in our house.
